Warning About Range Rover Service
With a starting manufactures suggested retail price of $82,650 the Range Rover is a serious investment. It is also a wonderful vehicle with almost 8,000 lbs of towing capacity and 74 cubic feet of load space volume. The range rover is strong enough to take on heavy duty work while still elegant enough to drive for a night on the town or to a special event. You may not be aware of this, but the Range Rover is the only car to hold Royal Warrants in Blenheim Palace.
There is no question that these are outstanding vehicles. The only real question is when something goes wrong or it is time for service, where do you take it? Many people think that a dealer would be the only place to go. However, the often feel apprehensive because of the tricks dealerships play to increase profits.
Here is the problem unsuspecting consumers may face when they take their Range rover in for routine service. “Service Advisors” are paid on commissions so they act more like a salesperson than a mechanic. “Service Advisors” know that the more work they can convince people they “need” the more money they will put in their pocket.
You may go in for a routine maintenance and find that the “Service Advisor” is pushing the “dealer recommended service.”
This is usually where you services like oil changes and transmission fluid flushes are “recommended” when they are not needed. The best protection for this is to simply read the owner’s manual. Sounds simple but very few people do it. The owner’s manual will tell you how often service is needed.
Dealerships don’t profit from serious repairs that take a lot of the mechanics time and require extensive parts. They would rather sell you on simple quick jobs with high mark up like tune up, oil change and brake repairs. This is not to say all dealerships are bad, but it is important for you to be aware because you never know what you’ll be getting.
What about going to independent shops for Range Rover service?
You have to be careful here too. If you choose to go to an independent shop you can save a lot of time and frustration. At Independent shops like Dr Auto Tech you can get to know the owner personally. This helps ensure the level of service remains consistent. You also want to work with a well established shop who is involved in the community and cares about their reputation. Check to see how long they have been in business and what their BBB Rating is. Also see what other people have to say.
Of course not every independent shop is equipped to handle high end vehicles like a range rover, so you want to make sure they have all the equipment and diagnostic technology to handle anything that can be done at a dealer. The shop should also be Bosch certified.
Whatever you decide it is important make sure you keep up with your Range Rover Service schedule to keep your Range Rover in good repair.
